Glasgow Tango Festival Teachers 2008
About the Teachers
Mabel Rivero. is a dancer from Rosario/Argentina. She started in her young years with a classical ballet training and later modern dance. She graduated with her tango training and a special style from studies with Orlando Paiva in Rosario. She has studied with Gustavo Naveira, Graciela Gonzales and other masters in Bueno Aires. This was followed by numerous shows and performances in South America and Europe. The absolute highlight was touring through Europe with the orchestra of Domingo Federico. In March/April 2001 she worked for the third “Festival Internacional de Tango” in Buenos Aires under the guidance of Miguel Angel Zotto. Mabel teaches all over Europe and is famous for her elegance in footwork and her explicit and precise explanations even in a complex course of motions.
Ines Moussavi. As long as I can remember I have loved to dance. For some years I concentrated on Dance-Theatre, Jazz dance and classical Ballet. Since 1996 I have danced Tango Argentino. It was love at first glance when I visited my first milonga, the “Roter Salon” in Berlin. I was impressed by the intimacy, the music and elegant moves. The next day I subscribed for my first tango lesson, not knowing that the process of learning and enjoying the new possibilities would never end. Tango became the most important thing in my life and – lucky me – even my profession. Some things that I like to share with my students: are a relaxed upright posture, comfortable embrace, feeling for the music, solid balance and elegance in movements, connection in the couple and awareness of the others dancers, taking care of the line of dance.
Sari Lievonen is a versatile performer and visual artist who has worked as a dance professional in theatre and contemporary dance since 1987. She first fell in love with tango while studying in Paris in the late1980’s. Still, when returning home to Finland the time was not yet ripe to introduce Argentine Tango in a country that had a rich tango culture of its own. Sari has been part of Glasgow tango scene for the past five six and is one of the organizers of the Glasgow Tango Festival.
Bennie Bartels. A professional contemporary dancer since 1984. He embraced Tango in 1991 while dancing in Montreal with Lalala Human Steps. He is guaranteed to take your dancing to another plane. You will find a new core deep within you that you had no idea existed. If you want to experiment and dance from the heart? This man will show you how.
Micha Diegel, Coming from a background of music and storytelling, Micha Diegler is currently enthralled by the tango, by the elegance of its different styles and that old trick of transforming three minutes of beautiful tirralirra into a one-off journey through uncharted holdings of the heart. Or something. He was taught the tango chiefly by Dylan Thomas, Miyamoto Musashi, sequoias, snow leopards, and the Centaur Chiron, maestros he still strives to emulate. He must admit that to him, Tango remains a complete mystery, but he tries to get in touch with it any way he can think of. And he enjoys teaching very much.
Toine Straatman, 15 years ago I started to dance tango in El Corte. My whole life, growing up in a ‘dancing family’, I was addicted to dance, and after many years of dancing ballroom and Latin, I found Tango, or Tango found me. I loved Piazzolla but never realised, till I saw a Documentary about a visit of two Tango addicts to BAs, that in Holland tango existed in this form.During the years I took lessons, regular in El Corte, Eric Jorissens famous place. Took in several places in the world, classes, workshop, spend weekends, and weeks with several teachers, many, and as well of course the Argentine Maestros. Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, Pepito and Suzuki, Teté, Fabian Salas and Carolina, Gavito, and many others. One of the couples I like very much, Damian and Nancy, very nice style and inspiring teachers.Already more than 10 years ago I started to give classes with Monique, my regular partner but was asked as guest teacher with others as well. In many places in Europe we were invited to teach and perform. More than 10 years I’m with Monique one of the regular teachers of El Corte in Nijmegen and these days as well in Flor the Fango in Arnhem. As educated teacher/ coach, I integrated this skill, together with bodywork, in tango lessons. Besides being a good teacher, it’s evident that a dancer I give an example with my partners, elegant, playful, that makes people want to follow classes. I think tango, even when I dance and teach for years now, I am open for influences, like to take classes myself for the inspiration of other teachers, and from my point of view, you might think you’re excellent, there is always something you can work on!My vision, tango inspires, I like to inspire and I like to be inspired by the dance and tango people!
Gustavo Colmenarejo was born in Buenos Aires city. He came into contact with dancing through the Argentine folklore. He graduated as superior teacher of Argentine folkloric dance (“El tango” included). He also performed together with a folkloric company in theatres of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay and Cuba. At the same time, he studied music (violin). The acquisition of this kind of knowledge provided him with valuable influence that results in the great richness of his dancing musicality. In 1997 he started his specific study of tango. During the next years, he periodically took classes with recognized tango masters. Similarly, he studied classic ballet and techniques of contemporary dances. All these contributed to his solid formation as dancer. He lives in Berlin, Germany, since April 2005, where he continues with his teaching work, performances, as well as holding workshops of Argentine folklore Regularly, he works as teacher and dancer in cities of Germany, Italy, Greece, Croatia and the city of Hong Kong.
His personal style, consolidated by traditional trends and enriched by contributions of the so-called “tango nuevo” result in a refined mixture where the musicality, the fluency of movement and the understanding between partners are the personal and unmistakable stamp of this young dancer.
